Be Informed - Keeping Up With Current Events

Thanks to Cindy Kern for sharing her knowledge about current events with us. To keep up to date with what is going on, Cindy recommended checking these sites daily to get a balanced understanding of current news:

Cindy recommended that all contestants become knowledgeable about currents events, making sure to know both sides of the issue and be able to respectfully address questions from either side. She specifically recommended learning about the following:

• The current war, specifically learning the meanings of word such as fatwa, jihad, and Sharia Law. 
• Health care reform
• Basic government structure and branches of government, and understanding how laws are passed
• Midterm elections 2010 and their effect
• Supreme Court current cases, who serves as judges and Chief Justice, what their role is, and the debate between judicial activism and restraint, 
• Issues of Federalism - the separation of powers between state and federal

March 11 Workshop | Guest Speaker Cindy Kern

We're excited to have Chelsey's mom speak to us tonight about staying up on current events. This will be great information to prepare you for your interviews! See you tonight at 6:45!

Cindy F. Kern was born in California and raised in Colorado. She has been the Media Director for American Heritage since 1990 and has taught the class several times. She currently teaches the Current Events/Freshman Seminar class for the Political Science department. She graduated with a B.S. in political science and received her Master's Degree in political science in 1987 with an emphasis on constitutional law and the necessity of public and private virtue in maintaining a republic. She is married to the wonderful Robert A. Kern and they are the proud parents of six children. She loves politics, reading, movies, biking, traveling, and is an AVID fan of the Utah Jazz, Denver Broncos, and BYU football and basketball.
