This week was another GREAT Miss Orem and Miss Orem Outstanding Teen Workshop. Gayla Muir was the motivational speaker addressing the topic of self-image and developing your full potential.
Gayla is a fabulous example and mentor. She is always involved in the community and her life is all about service. She has held many volunteer positions from Arts Council member and advocate to the past Miss Orem Scholarship Program Director.

Just this past October Gayla was awarded the "Woman Making a Difference in Utah" award by the Women's Division of the Provo/Orem Chamber of Commerce at the Aura of Autumn Event.

We have the opportunity to learn a lot about ourselves at the Miss Orem Workshops.

We make new friends and have fun together.

The treats at the workshops taste as delectable as they look. We have the best Hostesses.

Healthy Heart Day at the Orem Fitness Center

Recently the Orem Fitness Center hosted a Healthy Heart Day. They offered patrons free health screenings such as blood pressure readings, blood glucose and oxygen testing as well as body fat testing.

It's always fun to meet and mingle.

Ready Behind the Wheel

Recently I've gone into the different High Schools in Orem promoting my platform, "Ready Behind the Wheel." Distracted driving is such a prevalent and rampant issue causing motor vehicle accidents, injuries and even death. The truth is that driving distracted is something totally within our control - something we can elminate.
I've collaborated and joined forces with Sgt. Wade Raab of the Orem Department of Public Safety, Traffic Division. This gives me the opportunity to speak in the Orem Traffic Safety Schools several evenings a week and challenge the participants to focus on the road and drive safe.

I've met with the Principals at all of the High School's in Orem and arranged to speak multiple times in each of the High Schools.

I've spoken with the Utah Valley Government Review Council and challenged each of them to make their cars a NO PHONE ZONE.

Steve Densley, Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce President, is on board with being ready behind the wheel.

We can all be ready behind the wheel each time we turn on the ignition of our cars. Let's turn off our cell phones and focus on the road.

Community Writing Center at the Orem Public Library

The Community Writing Center at the Orem Public Library is now open.
Utah Valley University has partnered with the Orem Public Library to provide a community writing center for the public, free of cost. At the CWC, writing coaches will help all patrons become confident, independent writers.
The CWC has three areas of focus: education, community and collaboration, and helping citizens become better writers. They are there to help with homework assignments, family histories, resumes, work letters, cover letters, brainstorming, prewriting, revising, and the list goes on. If you have a writing need the Community Writing Center at the Orem Public Library can help.
Mark Twain said, "The difference between the right word and almost the right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug."

In attendance was Orem Mayor Jim Evans, his lovely wife, and Tannah.

Miss Orem Workshop

Last night was another FABULOUS Miss Orem and Miss Orem Outstanding Teen Workshop.
The pictures tell the story of these incredible girls. Each one sparkles with individuality and enthusiasm.

Working on interview skills can be fun!

Speed interviewing is a favorite. Every two minutes it's time to move down to the next interviewer.

Dance rehearsal comes next. There is as much laughter as there is dancing.

We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated committee. They donate their time, resources, skills and abilities to help us young girls grow and develop.

It's time to WALK - shoulders back, swing arms evenly and don't forget to smile.

Now I Can Ribbon Cutting

Yesterday was the ribbon cutting for the Now I Can Foundation in Provo.
Now I Can is a non-profit organization founded by Joel and Tracey Christensen whose mission statement is to help children with disabilities reach their full potential.

Jeremy Cleek was the Chamber of Commerce host for the ribbon cutting.

Joel and Tracey's first born child, Colby Ann, was born with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy. They found an Intensive Model of Therapy and Suit therapy in Poland, which with the help of family, friends and strangers, they brought to Utah.

The Now I Can center is bright and cheerful and full of positive amazing staff members. It offers traditional physical therapy, intensive suit therapy and feeding therapy.

It was my privilege to participate in the ribbon cutting for Now I Can.

Brigham Young University Symphony

Last week I had my first rehearsal with the Brigham Young University Symphony. Playing with a symphony is always AMAZING!
In January BYU held a concerto competition and I was selected to play as a pinao soloist.

My piano professor, Dr. Irene Peery-Fox, was with me at the rehearsal. She is fabulous!

The concert will be on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:30 pm in the DeJong Concert Hall at BYU.

There will be several pieces performed that evening. I will be playing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1, 1st movement.

Last night was the first Miss Orem and Miss Orem Outstanding Teen Workshop. The next weeks will have an amazing effect on these girls lives.
They will be learning interview skills.
Mentors will be there to help them every step of the way.
They will be learning an opening dance number.

And most importanly having a ton of fun! Each week there will be tasty snacks,

with a thoughtful and encouraging take-home,

complete with a motivational message.

Each contestant will also have the opportunity to learn walking skills. It is going to be a fabulous journey. I'm so glad to be a part of it.

Miss Orem Royalty Lunch

Last week I invited the Miss Orem Royalty over for lunch. Each one is so incredible, accomplishing their goals and making a difference in our community. We are having a fabulous year together. Through the Miss America Scholarship program you are able to meet new people and make life-long friendships. In the picture you see Monique, Sydney and Sheri. Sadly Brittany was not able to make it.
One of my hobbies is cooking. Today's menu was Caesar Salad, Bacon Quiche and Fruit Tart.

Volunteering at Romney Headquarters

There are so many ways each of us can get involved in our communities and volunteer our time and resources.
With elections right around the corner raising voter awareness is one of those ways. The Romney Utah Headquarters just happens to be located in Orem.

I like to go to the Romney Call Center several hours a week to make calls encouraging registered voters to get out and vote.

Over the weekend we were placing calls to Florida.

The call center always has volunteers but there is usually a spot or two open if you want to come down and join us.

I think we are so fortunate to live in a country where we have the right to vote. Wouldn't it be great if we all exercised that right?

Last night was the Miss Orem 2012 Opening Workshop at the Orem Friendship Center.
How fun it was for me to have the opportunity to speak to the candidates and tell them about the Miss America Scholarship program and how it empowers women and helps us to be the best we can be.

Kimberly Harris and the team of Miss Orem Hostesses do a fabulous job of organizing the workshops and mentoring the girls.

The year is going by so quickly. I have learned so much and have had wonderful opportunitities to get to know and serve the city of Orem.

Margaret Black from the Orem City Council was in attendance and began the evening with words of wisdom and encouragement to the group. Our City Council is so supportive of the Miss Orem Program. I appreciate all that they do for us. They really make a difference.

I'm looking forward to getting to know each of the girls as we begin the weekly Miss Orem Workshops.

Each week will be filled with lessons to learn and suprises to enjoy.

Thanks to my family for being there to support me. They are the best.

Good Luck candidates. This will be an amazing journey.

Motivational Speaking

One of my favorite opportunities as Miss Orem is public speaking. Today I was able to spend some time with young girls talking about setting and accomplishing goals - reaching their dreams.
Young girls are so enthusiastic. They have a lot of dreams.

One of my goals is to help them realize they can accomplish anything if they set their minds to it.

A highlight is watching each girl's face light up as they try on my crown. I want them to know they are already princesses. They can make their dreams come true!

Thanks girls for letting me share some time with you. Remember: Have COURAGE and don't get discouraged!

Miss America Pageant 2012

Last week was the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It was AMAZING to experience. I was lucky enough to spend the week.

I had several opportunities to meet and talk with Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011.

I was able to meet designers like Sheri Hill.

Take in fun sights.

Enjoy DELICOUS food like this chicken with bacon waffles from Hash House A Go-Go.

Mango and coconut pancakes also at Hash House A Go-Go (we ate breakfast there twice).

BBQ Pork Nachos and Chili Cheese Fries from Cheeseburger in Paradise. Besides the great dinning opportunities there was the main event - the PAGEANT!

In the Tuesday night preliminaries Danica Olsen, Miss Utah 2011, won Lifestyle and Fitness in a swimsuit. She rocked it!

She was awarded a $1,000 Scholarship for her win. Here she is in her evening gown receiving her award from Teresa Scanlan.

Wednesday night was Danica's night to compete in talent. She is an amazing dancer.

Saturday night Miss Wisconsin, Laura Kaeppeler, was crowned Miss America 2012.

What a fantastic week. Congratulations to Danica Olsen, Miss Utah 2011. I was thrilled to be in Vegas to support her! I'm looking forward to the Miss Utah Competition this June.

Orem's Center for Story Benefit

Orem's Center for Story held a Benefit Concert on Friday night. Master Storyteller DONALD DAVIS was there to entertain. He is AMAZING!!
Twenty-two years ago Karen Ashton founded the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in her backyard which has now grown to be the largest storytelling festival in the West. They continue to grow and are in need for a "Center for Story."

So they held a benefit concert at Orem High School. During the silent auction it was my pleasure to play background piano music. The event was well attended - but nobody shows up on time.

There were lots of items donated by community citizens and businesses. I am always impressed with Orem's generosity. We are surrounded by people who want to give and serve to make Orem a better place to live.

There were other musicians who entertained as well.

Then I mingled with those in attendance.

And I bid on LOTS of fun items.

There was also tasty treats to enjoy. Thanks Orem for supporting the arts and the Center for Story.

Calvary City on a Hill

Last Friday I attended the Calvary City on a Hill ribbon cutting in Provo. They are a non-denominational church that recently relocated from American Fork where they have been for the past 30 years.
Here I am with Pastor Pat. Calvary City on a Hill is very involved with helping those in the community with things like after school programs and providing those in need with winter coats. They do a lot of good works.

They are located in the old Provo Theatre Company building at 105 East and 100 North in Provo.

Provo Mayor John Curtis was also at the event.

La Puente Ribbon Cutting

La Puente Mexican Restaurant is now in Orem.

I was able to attend the ribbon cutting which was on November 7th. They have a fun atmosphere and delicious food.

In Her Shoes Gala

On October 27th the United Way of Utah County Women in Philanthropy held their annual "In Her Shoes" fund raiser at the Bella Vista Reception Center in Lindon. This fun BLACK TIE event raises money to improve the lives of women and children in Utah County. To this end there were three auctions - silent, live and gong.

All the Utah Valley Queens and their Attendants were part of the event helping with different aspects of the auctions. Here I am with Sheri, Monique, Brittney and Sydney.

Miss Provo, Meredith Gaufin, was there as well.

The decor and gift bags were fun.

I feel lucky to be apart of the happenings in the Valley. There are so many great ways to give and serve. What a fantastic slogan, "Living United by choosing to Give, Advocate or Volunteer."

Watkins Awards

The Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce Annual Watkins Awards took place on October 27th at the UVU Campus. This is an event where businesses as well as citizens in the community are recognized and awarded for their service and good deeds. There are many Chamber Sponsors for this event.

Orem's past Mayor, Jerry Washburn was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award and it was accepted by his wife and children in his behalf.

It was my privilege to play the piano for prelude, dinner music as well as the entertainment portion of the evening. As Miss Orem I am constantly learning about the amazing community in which we live and all the many acts of sacrifice and service given by our citizens and businesses. Thanks Orem for being such a great place to live.

Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation Ribbon Cutting

The Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation recently had a ribbon cutting for their new offices located on the first floor of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. I was able to attend this event with Meredith Gaufin, the reigning Miss Provo.

The Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of patient care in our local hospitals and improving the health of those living in our communities. Among their many endeavors they have recently raised and donated money for the Family Guest House, for Pediatric Rehabilitation, Children's Health programs and the Utah Valley Rregional Emergency and Trauma Services Expansion.

Meredith and I thought it would be fun to get a picture together holding the "Provo - Orem Chamber of Commerce" ribbon cutting scissors.

The Aura of Autumn was an AMAZING event. It is held every year to honor the "Woman Making a Difference." This year the woman honored was Gayla Muir who has volunteered in many capacities for 20 years. It was my pleasure to play the piano for prelude and lunch as well as participate in the fashion show.

Johnny Revill was the emcee and part of the entertainment. He is talented and fun.

We have talented women who give freely of their time and talents everywhere in our community. I am grateful for their example.

BYU Homecoming Parade

This morning was the BYU Homecoming Parade. It was a blast! The weather was a little cooler then it has been for other parade's, but no worries we bundled up and enjoyed every minute.

One of our favorite things to do at parade's is walk around the staging area and take pictures with all the floats, dance teams, sports teams, etc.

There was a square dancing group, so as we passed by...we did a little dosey- doe.

Onion Days Parade in Payson

The Onion Days Parade in Payson, Utah was on Labor Day, Monday, September 5th, 2011.

We had some crisp chilled watermelon to snack on while we were waiting in the staging area.

This cute little girl was also named Hannah. She wants to be a princess when she grows up. I told her she was one already.

There was a cute studio of little cheerleaders with whom we wanted to get a picture. Who jumps into the frame trying to steal the spotlight? The UVU mascot, Wolverine. He is full of energy!

Swiss Days

Swiss Days was Saturday, September 3rd, 2011. What a fun event!
It is held in Midway, Utah.
I was there.

So was Sydney, 1st Attendant.

And Brittney, 2nd Attendant.

We do not bring our float up Provo canyon for the Swiss Days Parade.

Instead we used a fancy truck.

We always meet a lot of fun people while we are at the staging area before a parade begins.

After the Swiss Days Parade, in the City Park, there are so many interesting booths to investigate. I love attending Swiss Days every year. I always find something fun and unique that I can't live without! :-)

Timpanogos Storytelling Festival

The Timpanogos Storytelling Fesitval was held last weekend, September 1-3. It takes place Labor Day weekend in Orem, Utah at the City's Mount Timpanogos Park. This year was the 22nd Anniversary of the Festival and it's the largest storytelling festival in the West. Sheri (4th attendant) and I were there to join in the fun.
We were able to meet and talk with a lot of school age children who attended. We actually ran into Sheri's younger brother who was there with his school.

Stella Welch, former Orem Mayor, is a big fan of the Festival.

Meeting little princesses is one of my favorite parts of being Miss Orem.

One of the events at the Festival is learning how to throw pottery. I've never done that before. It was a lot of fun.

The Storytelling Festival has great visitors. They estimate 40,000 attendees this year. Wow!

I thought the floral decorations at the lunch tables added a touch of class.

Mingling with the crowds were medieval entertainers like this talented juggler.

He is actually throwing knives here.

You can always count on Orem's police to keep every event safe and secure and just be there to help when needed.

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival is amazing. I didn't take any pictures of all the talented and mesmorizing tellers. The Festival has tents and tents of Storytellers going on all throughout the day. The stories are fantastic. If you haven't ever been to the Festival put it on your calendar now for Labor Day weekend 2012.

Share a Smile Triathlon

August 27th was the "Share a Smile" Triathlon. The purpose was to help raise money for a permanent charity dental clinic at the new Food and Care Coalition site. This will be a place where all dental professional from the Utah Valley area can continue to donate their time and skills to the homeless and poor in our community. Monique (2nd attendant) and Brittney (3rd attendant) were there with me to help serve at this event.
Jake helped organize all the volunteers for this years' event as his eagle scout project.

This fundraiser is lead by Dr. Eric Vogel, D.D.S and Dr. Steve Berry, D.D.S. (pictured).

There were a lot of volunteers of all ages!

Also lots of athletes.

The triathlon included a 1/4 mile swim, a 10 mile bike ride and a 3.2 mile run.

There was also a children's race.

The children swam 1 length of the Scera pool, rode their bikes for 1/2 mile and ran for 1/4 mile.

Way to go kids!

Brittney, Monique and I were stationed at the corner of Orem Center Street and University Avenue.

There was a public safety volunteer with us as well.

We cheered the bikers on.

What a fun event and a worthy cause. Thanks Dr. Vogel for all the charitable work you do in our community.

Have you ever wondered what colors look best on you? I know I have! As I have been exploring this topic I want to share what I have learned. I always love learning new things! (especially about fashion! ) :-)

When you talk to experts who advise women on which colors work best for them, you may hear terms like "warm" or "cool" in relation to your skin tone. But what do these terms mean?

Warm

You're probably a warm if you have:

Dark brown or black hair
Deep red or auburn hair
Reddish or golden brown hair
Brown or green eyes
Olive or golden skin
Beige skin
Skin which tans easily

Cool

Cool complexions are typically defined by:

Light to medium brown hair
Light green, hazel or blue eyes
Grey or blue-grey eyes

Parade kicks off Pioneer Day celebrations

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) – Pioneer Day celebrations started early Monday morning for the Days of ’47 Parade. After months of preparation, the state’s oldest parade marched through downtown Salt Lake City.

Bands, floats, royalty; the parade were covered at this year’s Days of ’47 Parade.

Hannah Harkness, Miss Orem, talked to ABC4 about her job in the parade. Miss Orem said, “We got up early this morning and we've just been seeing the floats.”

An early, or maybe late Sunday, start for everyone in this year’s parade.

For those in the parade, this was the time to put all of their work on display. The Wilford Stake spent months and thousands of hours to get their float ready. They took their namesake and an original Utah pioneer to become the theme of their float.

A perfect example of how this parade, remembers our state’s heritage and looks to the future, celebrating Pioneer Day in Utah.

Today the Miss Orem Royalty was in the Days of '47" parade. It has been a few years since we have participated in this parade and I have missed it. The Orem Float won the Governors Award which is 1 of 2 awards that is awarded to the city floats participating in the parade. Yesterday morning was the annual Orem Fire Fundraiser Breakfast. The Orem Firefighters put on a big yummy breakfast for the community at the Orem MACEY grocery store's parking lot. All the money they raise goes back into the community helping Orem families in need. Orem Firefighters are the BEST!
Breakfast was great!

The event was well attended from 7:00 am to 11:00 am. Way to go OREM!

I got to greet people and hand out balloons.

There was also the Orem Fire fleet and people could take tours of the Ambulances, Fire Trucks and Helicopters.

This policeman was dared to climb ALL THE WAY to the top of this ladder. I was next . . . but . . . we ran out of time. I am impressed with our community and all the service that is given. Orem Fire - you are the best! Thanks for all you do.

Eyeshadow Secrets

Being Miss Orem for the past couple of months I have been exposed to all kinds of grooming tips (make-up, hair, body, etc.)

A couple weeks ago my Young Women's President (who has an AMAZING blog at, purplechocolathome.blogspot.com- you need to visit this page!) gave me the brilliant idea that during my year as Miss Orem I should share some of these tips and secrets on the blog. So I decided to start with eyeshadow, I learned so many new things it boggled my mind.

First, the #1 rule of eyeshadow… eyeshadow should always coordinate with your eyes, not your clothes. – this was new to me!

What Color of eye shadow would be best with your eye color?

(Above, is a basic color wheel.)

To figure out what color of eyeshadow would best compliment your eyes, go to the color opposite of your eye color.

(For example, I have green eyes, the colors I have learned that best compliment my eyes are soft pink/reds, purples, and light browns.)

I always enjoy learning new make-up tips! Later I post on how to apply eyeshadow, first I need to practice a little more……hehe.

America's Freedom Festival at Provo 2011

America's Freedom Festival at Provo is an AMAZING week of events. It started out last Sunday with a Patriotic Devotional at the Marriott Center at Brigham Young University in Provo.

I was invited to the Reception beforehand and was lucky enough to have a conversation with Governor Gary Herbert and his gracious wife Jeanette.
The Patriotic Devotional is always moving.
This year the Devotional was hosted by Miss American, Teresa Scanlan (in red). She is talented and genial. Also, leading the Pledge of Allegiance was the newly crowned Miss Utah, Danica Olsen (in black).

I felt lucky to meet with them again.

Also in attendance was Miss United Nations, Miss Africa Utah and Miss Provo.

Move ahead to Saturday night - Stadium of Fire. At the Reception before Stadium of Fire I was able to meet and speak with service men and women who help to keep our Country safe. Thanks to all those who put themselves in harm's way so we can be safe and free.

Chad Lewis (on my right) was the Emcee for Stadium of Fire this year. He used to play football for BYU and then went on to play tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles and for the St. Louis Rams. Steve Young (on my left) sits of the Festival Leadership board. He also played football for BYU and then was quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. They are both really nice men.

Also at the Reception was David Osmond. I know my mom would have gone crazy for Donny - but David was in attendance.

Stadium of Fire was well attended and lots of fun. David Archuleta was there and sang a handful of songs. His Star Spangled Banner was AMAZING! I got my picture taken with him at the Reception and I will post it when they email it to me. Those pictures were taken by a professional - no snaps allowed. Brad Paisley was the headliner for the evening. He was great!

The fireworks seemed like the best they have ever done. I enjoyed how the fireworks were choreographed to the music. Spectacular!

Today was the Freedom Festival Parade. Orem's float received the Mayor's Award. Hooray!

We had to be there fairly early this morning and all of us took naps at one point or another.

There were so many people at this parade. I think it was the biggest one yet.

My sisters are the best! They are supportive and sweet. I love you Grace and Esther.

People camped out overnight for good spots at the parade - some even sat on their roof tops. Crazy. What a fun week it has been. I love living here in Utah, our great state, and living in the USA! Happy Birthday America.

Miss Utah Week

Miss Utah week was AMAZING and FUN! Monday was "Show Me Your Shoes" at Gardner's Village. Bridget portrayed the theme of "Family Fun Night" and won FIRST PRIZE! Way to go Bridget!! At the Miss Utah Pageant she also won the "People's Choice Award" and the "Glen Harmon Instrumentalist Scholarship Award." Bridget did a phenominal job and looked poised and beautiful every night. She did Orem proud!
Team Bridget was STRONG every night.

Christina Lowe was an AMAZING Miss Utah.

Tiare Keeno is Miss Utah's Outstanding Teen 2010. I think she is going to do well at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant in Florida this August.

Danica Olsen, Miss UVU, won the Miss Utah title. I got this picture just minutes after she won the crown.

One of Miss Utah's prizes is the use of a brand new car for her year of service.

It was a busy but fun and educational week. We also had our 4th Parade on Saturday - the Lehi Parade. The Orem Royalty ROCKS!

P.S. Teresa Scanlain, Miss American 2011, was at the Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant. I was really impressed with her and was glad I had the chance to meet her and have a conversation. She is the youngest Miss American EVER being crowned at the age of seventeen and she is the only Miss American from the state of Nebraska. She is the middle of seven children and her winning talent was PIANO although she sang for us on the final evening of competition.

I LOVE PARADES! I have been going to parades my whole life. I find them exciting, fun and entertaining. I like parades even more now! (From left to right is Brittany, Sydney, Hannah, Monique and Sheri).
This was our first parade - the Springville Parade last Saturday. Our float won the Grand Prize!

Little Miss Orem, McKyla Strong, is five-years old and is the daughter of Kirk and Karen Strong. She is an amazing princess who loves to dance and smile.

We make a great team.

Look at all the details of the Orem City float. It is amazing. Our theme this year is "The World is our Stage"

Before the parades begin we have time to hang out, laugh and meet the other city Royalty's. That's one of my favorite parts.

Our second parade was also last Saturday - the Orem Summerfest Parade. It was great having so many friends and neighbors calling out to us. Yeah Orem! By the way - our float won the Grand Prize in this parade too.

Today was the Pleasant Grove Strawberry Day's parade. FUN!

Next week is the Miss Utah Pageant. I'll be there cheering Bridget on.

The Summerfest Appreciation Dinner pays tribute to the committees and volunteers who organize and execute Summerfest. It also honors the Summerfest Grand Marshal and Student Marshals. The Appreciation Dinner is the official kick-off to the Orem Summerfest Celebration. Here we are with Orem's Mayor, Jerry Washburn and City Council Member, Mark Seastrand.
Here I am with Sydney Flanigan, 1st Attendant and Monique Shurtz, 2nd Attendant. We were part of the entertainment portion of the evening.
We had the opportunity to help congratulate the 8 Student Marshals who stand out as role models in their Junior High schools.

Memorial Day

On Monday I attended my first official function as Miss Orem - the Memorial Day Service at the Orem Cemetery. The rain and cold weather did not deter the faithful veterans as they set up and prepared for the event. My family has a tradition of visiting the graves of our ancestors every year but attending Orem's Memorial Day Program with the gun salute and all made me feel very patriotic and proud to be an American. I was especially moved by Major Wilbur Drake who told stories of his missions as a pilot during the 2nd World War. It was an amazing morning! Thank you veterans and service men and women for your sacrifices and for keeping American free.

Wow! What an incredible experience! Being a part of the Miss Orem Scholarship Pageant was a blast. I have to say I have never experienced anything like it and every minute was such a thrill. I wish I could experience it all over again. I am so excited and look forward to the coming year. I can't wait to learn and grow from all the new opportunities and experiences.

So let me tell you a little about pageant night. The actual pageant goes by so quickly it's insane. In-between changes backstage clothes are flying, hairspray is everywhere, and before you know it you are back on stage. Being on stage is such a delight. My favorite part of the night was the opening dance number. Our theme this year was "Unveil Your Potential." So for the dance each one of us had our own face mask that we decorated to fit our personalities and at certain points during the dance we pulled the mask away from our face for a dramatic effect. The music we danced to was, "Phantom of the Opera" - the techno version. I dare you to look up the song on You Tube. Then you will see how fun and exciting it was. Kudos to our awesome choreographer Liz - you did a great job Liz!

Over all, my favorite part of the pageant was getting to know and love each one of the girls. We have been getting to know each other since March. Through all the preparation and work preparing for the pageant we have become one big family. It's incredible!

In the first week of being Miss Orem it has been a blast meeting with Bridget and learning about the different responsibilities of Miss Orem. Bridget is so remarkable and I have already learned so many marvelous things from her. As a fun side comment, I have known Bridget since I was 14. We took piano lessons from the same teacher. We actually competed as duet partners once. Bridget is a phenomenal girl and I look up to her in so many ways. Love you Bridget! You'll do great at the Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant. I will be there with your cheering section rooting you on.

Friends, Family, and Followers,

Although I still have 2 more weeks til the Miss Orem pageant, I wanted to make sure I'd have time to write a last post since these next 2 weeks are going to be pretty busy!

First off, I want to THANK EVERYONE for helping me along this wonderful journey. THANKS to family, friends, Kim, Elisa, Committee, Royalty, City Council, Mark, Pat, Heather, and about 100 other people who made my year as Miss Orem absolutely glorious. (Note to Kim- Kim, this isn't my farewell letter. haha).

Tomorrow will make it one year as Miss Orem, and that's hard to believe! This year has been glorious yet challenging. Here are 3 things I've learned as Miss Orem:

1. The worth of a soul: one soul is of more value than the wealth of the world. And I believe that. If everyone realized their own worth AND the worth of others, we would have no hate, envy, lust, or greed. Not convinced? Exhibit A: Little girls. When I go to schools around Utah I always make sure to give the girls (and even boys:) a chance to try on my crown. In that moment in which the crown touches her head, the little girl's face glows because she feels like royalty. And she is. In that moment when I have the awesome opportunity to see these girls getting a glimpse of how much they really are worth, I see greatness. Not to forget the boys, they are also worth SO MUCH, but putting a crown on their heads just brings giggles :)

2. Importance of Service. This past year I've had my share of heartache and disappointments, but the one thing that saved me was service. We all have a tendency to sit and complain or dwell on our rotten luck or our heartache, but when we do that we only bring ourselves and those around us down. Instead of feeling awful go and SERVE and I promise you that you'll feel loads better! Exhibit B: In early September I had experienced a huge disappointment that really brought my spirits down. Luckily I had a service event for Miss Orem scheduled to help out at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. That whole day I was focused on others, and I had no time to worry about my own problems. Service is the best cure for just about anything :)

3. Smile :). I'm happy to inform you that my cheeks are 50 percent stronger than last year, because this year as Miss Orem I've smiled a LOT! Try the following: Sit in your room and just smile for no apparent reason, just smile! Yup, you'll feel good :)

Again, THANK YOU, I truly do love you, and I pray that you'll never give up on yourself or on God. I'm onto the next adventure (Miss Utah)! Come what may and LOVE IT!

Habitat for Humanity

This morning I had the opportunity to BUILD with Habitat for Humanity. It was the end of "Women Build Week", where local female community leaders and Democratic and Republican women came together to work on the house. It was so fun to work with these educated and political female figures in our community. It was especially fun to work with women from the Orem city council (Margaret Black, Karen McCandless), they never cease to amaze me!

Today Keith (the amazing builder!) taught us how to put dry wall on the ceiling.... lets just say that it was a LOT of work, but we managed to finish the whole living room! It was such a blast to get up on the scaffold and feel like a construction worker haha. Keith even trusted me with the nail gun.... although I just held it and stared at it :).

Habitat for Humanity is such an amazing organization and I hope to help out again in the near future! (It was also fun to hear about the family that will move into the house, what a wonderful opportunity).

Finally, I've had something on my mind for the past couple of weeks, and I hope that it will bring a little light into your life :). Sometime ago my Grandma asked me, "Bridget, what happened to your bloom?" At first I didn't understand what she was asking me, and when I asked for clarification she said, "A rose is just a rose...but with the bloom returned...it's GLORIOUS!!" After my Grandma said this I had a lightbulb moment. Sometimes the hard times in life can take away the "bloom" from our flowers. Instead of letting our petals absorb the light that God has given us, we close ourselves off for many reasons: hurtful situations, people, or circumstances.

Luckily, we can restore our "bloom" in our lives. Here are three things that help me to restore my bloom: 1. "Embrace this day with an enthusiastic welcome, no matter how it looks." 2. "Be grateful for every opportunity to serve." 3. "When you are compelled to give up something or when things that are dear to you are withdrawn from you, know that this is your lesson to be learned right now. But know also that God wants to give you something better."

May we all restore the "bloom" to our lives :)

Hello FRIENDS!! :)

Ok.... so I can see you right now. Yep. You are sitting at your computer reading my blog, which is a glorious thing... BUT, I want you to get up from where you're sitting and do a couple of jumping jacks, NEXT put on your shoes and workout clothes, NEXT grab your ipod..... have you done it? Good. I commend you for your enthusiasm :) ... Last but not least, I challenge you to go for a jog! It doesn't have to be a long jog, just enough to get your heart rate going. I promise you that you'll feel better! (Don't forget to peer pressure your friends and family to go and exercise with you).

After an exhausting workout with Pat yesterday, I feel like an achy old woman! But, working out really inspires me to get everyone involved. Exercise can exponentially increase your quality of life. If you need an indoor facility to exercise in, go to the Orem Recreational Center, entrance fees for 14yrs-up is $4!

My second challenge for you, is to "move" in a different way. Find a group or organization that you can serve or help in any way. Before Miss Orem, I always gave a "bare minimum" effort in service. I didn't know how or who I could help. The key for me was to write down my strengths, and in doing so I found out who I could help.

My target groups for service are children/youth especially young woman. My focuses are fitness and self worth.

Service can be as simple as giving advice. The wonderful thing that I've realized thus far on my journey through life is that although I've made some mistakes, I can learn from them, and better yet someone else can learn from my mistakes. Everything happens for a reason, and I'm determined to make the best of this life that I've been given :)

This year the Miss Utah contestants are competing in the "Miss Utah Contestant Outreach Competition" to raise awareness for the Utah Child Protection Registry.

The Utah Child Protection Registry is a state program that allows families to sign up their household e-mail addresses, mobile phone numbers, instant messenger IDs, and fax numbers to avoid receiving adult-oriented advertisements. The Registry is a free program and currently protects nearly 400,000 family, children, and school addresses.

Hello my glorious friends!

So unfortunately I won't be able to attend the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event, due to a family emergency, but I hope you'll take time out of your Saturday to go and support the cause (information is in the last blog post.)

I have 2 more wonderful months of being Miss Orem and it is bittersweet. These next 2 months are scheduled to the max with assemblies, workshops, charity events, and Miss Utah preparation. What a blessing it has been to be Miss Orem, and I'm thrilled that another young woman will get this golden opportunity.

Something that has been on my mind lately is: SEIZE THE DAY. Lately I have found it imperative to look outside myself and truly "seize the day". Sometimes the world seems so dreary and the people in it seem to be so unreliable and disappointing. BUT, the glorious thing that I know to be true is that God is ever present in our lives! God loves all of His children, and that's one thing that we need to realize and act on. There is someone out there who needs our help, whether in the form of a friend, helping hand, or whatever it may be. We must SEIZE THE DAY, and find someone that we can lift to greater heights :)

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

On Saturday April 9th at 10AM-11:30 AM at Orem City Center and State Street there will be a mile walk put on by The Center for Women and Children in Crisis: "Walk a Mile in her Shoes". You'll get to walk a mile in high heels to raise awareness for rape and sexual assault. Men are also invited to wear women's shoes and literally walk a mile in her shoes. All proceeds will go to The Center for Women and Children in Crisis.

I am grateful to be able to help out at this event. Rape and sexual assault is unfortunately becoming more prevalent in our society, and it's crucial that we bring awareness to this issue.

Here is a little Miss Orem update:

The workshops have been fabulous! This years contestants are incredible; they are a very intelligent, refreshing, and beautiful group of girls. During last weeks interview portion of the workshops I bounced around to each group of contestants and listened to their responses to a wide range of questions and... WOW, their answers were very impressive and it definitely got me excited for the upcoming months that I get to spend we these beautiful ladies!

I've also been busy promoting my platform "Fitness for Youth" in the schools. Let me tell you one thing... children absolutely warm my soul. Being able to work out with them has been a privilege and a blessing.

I'm also preparing for Miss Utah. Excitement, nervousness, and anticipation are the common sentiments on that event which is coming up in the next 3 months! SO MUCH TO DO!!

Now, for your spiritual boost of the day, lately I've been thinking about earthly angels. It seems to me that whenever I'm going through challenging times God sends me his love through angels. Angels in the form of friends, family, and complete strangers. The other day I was feeling a little somber; I felt like I was stuck in an "Eeyore" mood when out of the blue a ray of sunshine brightened my day. I was sitting on campus at BYU when a young man approached me and in his suave british accent told me that I "looked lovely today", and BAM my day took a complete turnaround! Although we don't always have angels in the form of random Mr. Darcy's, we ALL have angels in our lives to help us through tough times, the key is to OPEN our eyes and see these special messengers and be grateful for them.....and luckily we also get to be angels in others lives :)

Valentine's Day is a week away, and I thought I'd write a Valentine's greeting from ME to YOU!!

Valentine's Day is a glorious day that celebrates love. No, not just romantic love but every type of love. If you don't have a special honey that you'll be spending this holiday with... no fear, because you are LOVED!! One thing that I have a firm belief in is that every soul is loved by so many people and more importantly by a Divine Being. If as Miss Orem the only thing that I have accomplished is helping ONE girl to know that she is loved and that she is full of worth, then I have succeeded.

In my own life I have had a huge awakening. I had depended so much on others to give me the love or validation that I thought I needed. In reality, my source of love and validation didn't come from any person, but rather it came from within.

So I challenge you all this Valentine's Day to do 2 things:

1. Realize that there is a SMORGASBORD of people who LOVE you.

2. Go and show love to someone else.... whether it be your mailman, mom, or a mean professor (haha...) LET YOUR LOVE AND LIGHT SHINE!!!!

As for me, I'll be spending this Valentine's Day with the most attractive young man in Orem... MY BROTHER!!!! :)

Long time no see! These past few weeks have been full of fun and adventure, I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico over Christmas break and let me tell you... everyone NEEDS to visit the beach at least once a year for your mental health! :) The day after I returned from Mexico I was able to attend Christina Lowe's Miss America send off. She was absolutely FABULOUS! Her gowns were stunning and she did well with interview and her talent... she's truly an inspiration. I'm excited to watch her at Miss America on the ABC channel next Saturday.... GOOD LUCK MISS UTAH!!
ALSO, we have the date for our "Miss Orem Mix and Mingle". It will be February 24th at the Friendship Center in Orem. If you are reading this right now and are a young women who is a current resident of Orem.... COME TO THE MIX AND MINGLE! I cannot wait to meet this years contestants :)

City of Orem's Christmas Lighting Event

Monday night, the City of Orem flipped the switch to turn on the city's lights. Their was a great children program and the Mayor spoke to get the event underway. The city council were all wearing Santa hats and handing out candy. The Miss Orem Royalty was able to participate in this event by actually flipping the switch. This post is specifically to the beautiful young women reading my blog. Whether you're looking to become the future Miss Orem or just curious at what Miss Orem does. Tonight as I was lying in bed I had a strong urge to write you a message.

One thing I've learned as Miss Orem is that all women are beautiful in their own unique way. When I was 12 years old I was insecure and struggling to find my own personal beauty. I had braces, glasses, and poofy hair.... I felt like I belonged on the island of misfit toys! haha. I'm sure there are many girls who felt or still feel the way I did. How did I discover my beauty? It wasn't a specific moment, but it was a slow realization of my worth and value. I believe in a Divine creator who is a merciful and loving God, and I believe that this higher being loves me more than I can possibly imagine. I believe this to be true for all women. Once I realized the love that my Creator had for me, I discovered my beauty.

Every young woman is beautiful and full of light. Discover your own unique beauty by realizing your worth and value. To all of those young women who have never been told that they are beautiful: I'm telling you now that you ARE!! Don't ever let someone tell you otherwise.

At a recent event, I met a young woman who thought of herself as plain and awkward. When I told her she was beautiful, her eyes lit up and in that moment she was more stunning than any beauty queen I've ever seen. I will never forget that moment, and I hope that every girl in this world will be told that she is beautiful. Because it is the truth.

The BYU Homecoming Parade was definitely one of our favorite parades. We are extremely grateful for the guys at Timpanogos Harley Davidson for escorting us in this parade. Their motorcycles were absolutely stunning.... I confess that I wanted to take these sleek motorcycles home with me!!

The Aura of Autumn was a FABULOUS event! It was put on by the Women's Division of The Chamber of Commerce. Barbara Smith, news anchor for KTVX (shown above) was the emcee . At this event I had the opportunity to perform prelude piano music and also participate in the fashion show. The Women Making a Difference Award was presented to Colleen Worthington the owner of Kneaders... we have amazingly talented women EVERYWHERE in our community.

Timpanogos Storytelling Festival!

On Friday afternoon (9/3/10) Haley and I went to the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. It was Haley's first Timp storytelling experience! The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival is an event where storytellers from across the nation come and tell their masterful stories. Stories ranged from: tall tale, cultural, scary, and comical stories. We walked around to mingle with the people who came to the storytelling festival.... everyone we talked to couldn't stop praising the storytellers and their stories. Needless to say, it was a success!

Veterans Breakfast

This Veterans breakfast was so eye opening for me. Sometimes, as a comfortable American young adult I tend to take my freedoms for granted. At this Veterans breakfast were veterans from the WWII, Vietnam, and Korean wars. Some of their experiences were heart wrenching, the things that these men have seen is almost incomprehensible. These men risked their lives so that we could have the freedoms that we have today, as citizens we CANNOT forget these veterans and their service to this nation.

One of my favorite ribbon cuttings this month was the Cupcake Chic ribbon cutting. This cute little cupcake shop has every flavor of cupcake imaginable from key lime pie to s'mores... they are absolutely delicious! Another memorable ribbon cutting was the Broadview University ribbon cutting (formerly Utah Career College). Needless to say, I was very impressed with this university, they have so many programs: massage therapy, veterinarian assistant, business, etc. As we were touring their campus, it made me really excited to go back to school! Ha! Their college and their graduates will be a great asset to Orem and our businesses. Summerfest 2010!!!

The Orem Summerfest was absolutely unforgettable. Saturday, the day of the parade, I was paranoid that it was going to rain! It had been rainy and cloudy the whole weekend, and so I kept praying throughout the week that it wouldn't RAIN ON OUR PARADE!! Haha, literally. I'm happy to report that it did not rain on our parade. It was a little chilly, but we were on such an adrenaline high that we could care less about the cold temperature.

On Friday, the day before our main festivities, I had the opportunity to do a sitting with the talented Casey Childs. We had planned on doing the sitting outside at a booth at the Summerfest, but our plans were shot down with the pouring rain. So, our backup plan was the Orem Public Library (my second home). We set up in the main area in the library, along with the Jazz Band from UVU.

Here is the finished portrait! Isn't he amazing? This only took an hour and a half..... crazy!

Surprisingly, it is extremely difficult to sit still for long periods of time. So every fifteen minutes we would take a break, where I would distort my face in order to relax my muscles. haha. What a hard life!

Here was the event line up that was posted right outside the event tent. I was super excited to perform with my gorgeous royalty.

When we got to the event tent, Kim, my amazing director, told me the dreadful news.... there was no keyboard for me to perform my talent. This was disappointing because I had planned to perform three piano pieces, and Haley (second attendant) was also planning on performing two piano pieces. But, I think this was a blessing in disguise, cause every classical pianist knows that playing on a keyboard is like eating cardboard... not very flavorful or satisfying. Ha. So instead of performing my talent, I talked about the pageant, my platform, and how to walk in heels. The rest of the royalty did a phenomenal job performing their talents! These girls are all so beautiful and talented, its been a blessing to get to be with them at these events.

The Special Olympics has by far been my FAVORITE event yet. I got the oppurtunity to award the athletes with ribbons and medals at the Special Olympics. Every athlete had such a special and sweet spirit, I felt like I had nothing to give to them and they had EVERYTHING to give to me. I will never forget those athletes.

A definite PRO of becoming Miss Orem is that you get to hold a lot of BABIES!! HAHA!! SO PRECIOUS!

This little girl was perhaps one of the most memorable little girls I've ever met. She kept looking at me like I was the Queen of the Universe, her eyes followed my every move. In that moment it struck me that little girls DO look up to me, and it really affected me... I needed to become a better role model in every way. I am grateful for that sweet little girl that thought I could do no wrong, she helped me to understand that I have a LOT of improvement to do, and I need to live my life in a way that would not disappoint that little girl :)

First Ribbon Cutting- Industrial Supply

My first ribbon cutting was exciting and new, it set the tone for me in welcoming new businesses to Orem. It was a lot of fun to walk around Industrial Supply and get a feel for their company and their products. I'm excited for the many ribbon cuttings coming my way this year.

It took me 3 TIMES in order for me to finally cut through the ribbon.... super embarrassing yet funny. It's a lot harder than you'd think to cut a ribbon with a pair of GIANT SCISSORS haha!!

First Official Event- 3K at Foothill Elementary

My first event as Miss Orem was the Foothill Elementary 3K run. Instead of running the 3k, I started the race and then greeted the runners at the finish line. We thought it would be best if Chelsey Ingersoll, the former Miss Orem and the amazing athlete, to run the 3k. Instead of having a hysterical display in my lack of running skills HAHA. Anyways, it was a great way to start my year of service as Miss Orem.

Pageant Night 2010

May 15th 2010 was not just any normal Saturday night for me, not only was it my 19th Birthday but it was the unforgettable night that I was crowned as Miss Orem 2010.

Backstage, all 16 of us girls were getting excited yet anxious yet scared out of OUR MINDS for the night to begin!! It seemed like we were waiting backstage for hours for the pageant to start! We prepped for the night by getting all dolled up, fake eyelashes and all. When I was sitting in our dressing room before the show, I was so overwhelmed with gratitude that I had this experience. When you enter for The Miss Orem pageant, you not only sign up for a one night experience, you sign up for 6 months of gaining interview, walking, and dance skills. Not to mention 15 new girlfriends!!!

This bright and sunshiney outfit above was for the sassy opening dance number.

The onstage interview was my greatest fear. When Ishanelle passed me the microphone for my turn of questioning I was downright petrified. To this day, I don't clearly remember what came out of my mouth, my brain went into "spit out" mode. Haha. I still haven't shaken my fear of onstage interview questions, but I have a year to cope with it until MISS UTAH!! AH!!

For my talent, I performed Romance by Jean Sibelius. The talent portion was the only part of the night that I wasn't completely scatter brained for, because I absolutely LOVED the piece that I performed. This piano piece has long been my therapy piano piece, whenever I was having a bad day I'd run to the piano and play this gorgeous song.

The moment they announced that Contestant #14 Bridget Kreis, was to be crowned as the new Miss Orem. I was not expecting that at all, but what a blessing it has been.

Cindy F. Kern was born in California and raised in Colorado. She has been the Media Director for American Heritage since 1990 and has taught the class several times. She currently teaches the Current Events/Freshman Seminar class for the Political Science department. She graduated with a B.S. in political science and received her Master's Degree in political science in 1987 with an emphasis on constitutional law and the necessity of public and private virtue in maintaining a republic. She is married to the wonderful Robert A. Kern and they are the proud parents of six children. She loves politics, reading, movies, biking, traveling, and is an AVID fan of the Utah Jazz, Denver Broncos, and BYU football and basketball.

I'm posting some ways for you to get in shape for the Pageant.

Sleep:

Make sure you are getting 8 hours of rest

Drinking water:

-How Much Water Do You Need?
Your body weight is more than 50% water. Without water, you couldn't’t maintain a normal body temperature, lubricate your joints, or get rid of waste through urination, sweat, and bowel movements.

Not getting enough water can lead to dehydration, which can cause muscle weakness and cramping, a lack of coordination, and an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. In fact, water is so important that a person couldn't’t last more than five days without it.

So how much water do you need? Enough to replace what you lose daily through urination, sweating, even exhaling. And your need for replacing water increases:

In warm or hot weather
With vigorous physical activity, such as exercise or working in the yard
During bouts of illness, especially if you are vomiting or have diarrhea
You often hear that you need to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board recommended that women actually need 91 ounces of water daily, and men need 125 ounces.

The good news is if you’re healthy, you don’t really need to keep track of how much you drink. You can get enough water each day by drinking when you’re thirsty and consuming fluids like soup and drinks, with your meals. Just keep in mind that if you’re going to do something strenuous, like playing sports or running, you’ll need extra water before, during, and after.
